Words from Sage on “A Sick Twist Ending”:
This “Sick Twist Ending” mixtape concludes my “Sick of…” mixtape series, which began in 1999 with the “Sick of Waiting” tape. As with the first one, this mixtape consists of a wild mix of material from various unreleased studio recordings, bedroom demos, live radio recordings, stage performances, and remixes. And more. It’s what the hell a mixtape is supposed to be no matter what these newfangled knuckleheads are going on about.
It also including features from emcees I work with along with material from each outfit I’ve been a part of over the decades (AOI, Non-Prophets, Epic Beard Men). The sound quality can shift from track to track as some of these files date back to the mid 90s, but I’ve always enjoyed threading together my timeline with the listeners. I’ve somehow managed to salvage these recordings despite the many moves, technological shifts, hard drive crashes, etc… There’s some sheen in this bad boy for sure, but most of it is very raw.
By this point, almost nothing has been left on the cutting room floor. I’ve emptied the old tape vaults and now there aren’t anymore unreleased songs that I think are shareable, hence, the conclusion of a mixtape series that lasted 25 years. It’s the reason the Strange Famous Records label grew legs in the first place and continues to kick ass.
A couple of the songs on this mixtape were leaked at one point or another, but now they all have an official home. The most special of shoutouts goes to Buck 65, whose production appears throughout this mixtape. We began working on a project in 2018 (which 4 of these songs are from), but soon after recording the demos I ended up in a whirlwind of life stuff which eventually landed in me in CT with a wife and kids. That type of life switch can really mess with your artistic output, but I think I’ve figured it out now. Buck also had some life whirlwinds of his own, which made it difficult to focus much on what we had started.
Before we knew it, 8 years had flown by and the original files were no longer accessible for a lot of the music. I look forward to us doing more official collaborations and I’m eager for people to hear the material that wasn’t chosen for this mixtape. In the meantime, I recommend people check out his vast catalog on Bandcamp. Not everything is available on the streaming sites, so sometimes you just have to dig a bit in your pocket and support the artists you love.
Now that this is finished, every project I start from here on out needs to be completed soon after starting it with an actual release date in mind. This has to happen. Whether I have a budget and a team behind the project or not.
That should be good news for people who’ve been patiently waiting for me to release new solo material because there is a lot on the way. My wonderful wife is probably the most relieved to hear that. All the love to her and the kiddos. The whole family.
Deepest of appreciation to the SFR artists and community for helping keep these wheels turning and for making it fun again.
Lastly, thank you to all the fans for your patience and continued support if you managed to hang on this long.
Salute!
Sage Francis
